Kakis Bistro and Bar – A Secret Garden

About Kakis Bistro and Bar

When you walk into Kakis’ lush garden, you enter a world that’s vastly different from the city you know.

Tucked away in the East Coast, this inviting al fresco concept bistro and bar was designed by the people behind Changi Airport’s Terminal 3. This quiet retreat is a great place to escape city life and chill with your friends. They even have a pool table and live bands to serenade you on weekends!

Unlike most gardens, Kakis is neither sweltering nor full of mosquitoes. I’m happy to report that despite spending 3 hours there, I didn’t leave with a single mosquito bite.

The space was well ventilated and breezy, but if you want to stay cool, sip on a refreshing Mojito made with homegrown mint leaves.

The Food

The most interesting thing about the food at Kakis is that they grow and harvest their own greens. Their produce was a highlight of many dishes. Their Prawn Alioli ($9.80) featured homegrown lemongrass and coriander, while the Stir Fried Button Mushrooms ($8.50) included homegrown kaffir leaves.

Kakis takes pride in preparing their dishes from scratch. I really enjoyed the Chicken Quesadillas ($10), which were topped with homemade salsa.

I also loved the batter for the Fish and Chips ($17) as it was crispy and didn’t become a soggy mess as time passed. Unfortunately, the fish itself was under-seasoned and too mushy.

Aside from food, Kakis also has an extensive drink menu which includes cocktails like the extravagantly named Flaming Lamborghini ($25). Traditionalists can get classic beers like Guinness for $14 during their 4-8pm Happy Hour. I would recommend trying their Fries Addiction ($6) as a bar bite, especially if you enjoy spicy snacks with that extra kick.

They also have a “make your own mojito” table where you can pick fresh, homegrown mint leaves. Follow the instructions for a creation you can be proud of!

Verdict

I really enjoyed the decor and the atmosphere at Kakis. There are live music acts every Friday and Saturday and we were lucky enough to be entertained by The Passerby, a local band that was extremely accommodating in taking requests. They even played Let It Go as requested by a cute little 4 year old girl, and we all know what a tough song that is to sing live!

Overall, I would recommend Kakis if you’re looking for drinks and finger food, as Kakis prides itself in being more of a bar than a full-fledged restaurant. The mains were decent, but were outshone by the tapas. Thankfully, servings are generous, so you can get a good meal out of some tapas and a few bar bites.

Getting to Kakis

For people who frequent Changi Village, you know that the place isn’t exactly accessible. If you plan on taking public transport, buses 2 and 9 would be your best bets. Alight at the Changi Village bus terminal and walk over to Farnborough Road. Kakis is right behind the Sree Ramar Hindu Temple.

Address: 289 Farnborough Road. Singapore 509747
Opening Hours: 4pm – 12am daily, closed on Tuesdays
