1. Baja Fresh Mexican Grill

Fillings like Chicken Breast, Pork Carnitas, Mahi Mahi? They’ve got it all.

Rendezvous Hotel isn’t where you’d expect to find a no-frills joint like Baja Fresh Mexican Grill, but it’s where you can satiate all Mexican food cravings. They do a mean Quesadillas (starting from $12.95/regular) – they’re generous with the meat of your choice, and ingredients are fresh with a side of salsa, sour cream, and guac.

But it’s not always about meat, cheese, and carbs. Baja Fresh also offers salads, with the likes of Caesar, Tostada, and Baja Ensalada (from $12.95). We tried the latter: it’s no ordinary salad and comes served up in a massive platter with crisp Romaine lettuce and pico de gallo salsa. Add on meats like Shrimp, Steak, or even Double Meat for an extra $4.

2. Barrio by Mex Out

Over at Barrio by Mex Out, you’ll be salivating over all dishes so it’s best to indulge in a feast with friends. Between the two of us, we shared a platter of Chips, Guac & Salsa ($11), a Chicken Pastor Burrito Bowl ($15) and 2 types of tacos – Baja Fish and Prawn Chipotle ($6 each).

Each taco came generously drizzled with sauce – chipotle, spicy, or avocado cream – and an artful arrangement of toppings like red cabbage and sliced onions. Thumbs up from us for the Baja Fish – it’s delicately crisp but oh so tender on the inside.

3. El Mero Mero

While most of us treat Mexican fare as comfort food, El Mero Mero is one fancy restaurant that serves beautifully plated dishes. Their Atlantic Grilled Octopus ($28) is dressed with corn cream and black garlic paste to bring out the charred goodness of the tender meat.

Another notable main, the El Mero Mero Enchiladas ($29), is served in a wrap filled with grilled chicken, rice, and beans – topped with cheese, sour cream, and red salsa for an added oomph.

Their dessert menu is equally delectable, with sweet treats like Tequila Pecan Pie ($14) and Churros & Chocolate Sauce ($14). While the churros were served golden-brown with a sugary caramelised crunch, the pecan pie was undoubtedly the star of the show. An added scoop of cinnamon-flavoured ice cream complemented the buttery pie crust perfectly.

4. Afterwit Mexican Taqueria

Halal Mexican restaurants aren’t easy to find, and Afterwit Mexican Taqueria is the sole standout in Singapore. You’ve got your standard burritos and tacos here, but all with a fusion flair with flavours like salted egg, peking duck, and wasabi shrimp. The Salted Egg Prawn Taco (from $15/2 tacos) each came with a prawn – left with their heads for those who like to suck all juices out.

They also offer up a range of burritos: Chipotle Chicken, Double Chilli Cheese Beef, Eggplant & Mango, and Wasabi Shrimp. We dug into the Double Chilli Cheese Beef ($10) and it was almost as if a cheeseburger exploded in our mouth – there was an overload of savoury minced beef with gooey strands of cheese holding it all together.

5. El Cocinero

In one of Novena’s quiet apartment blocks, Mexican joint El Concinero’s cooking up a storm. The restaurant’s discreetly hidden behind the front-facing row of shops – you wouldn’t see it while strolling by, instead, walk straight into the complex and you’ll see it on the right side.

Here’s a place where you can feast on tasty tacos like Chicken Pastor ($7.50/3 tacos) or Pork Belly ($8/ 3 tacos). All use fresh greens and spices – expect plenty of onions, coriander, salsa, and even refreshing slices of pineapple.

They also serve up other hearty Mexican dishes like burritos and quesadillas – we tried their Beef Picadillo Burrito which snugly holds together a generous filling of ground beef and potatoes. Of course, there was also an overload of melted cheese that we thoroughly appreciated. All burritos are priced at $10.50.

6. Senor Taco

Clarke Quay has plenty of restaurants, but Senor Taco is an obvious landmark for authentic Mexican fare. They’ve got sharing platters, from Guacamole & Chips ($16) to Chicken Wings (from $14/6 wings) but it’s the tasty selection of mains we’re eyeing.

Starting from $8, their tacos come in an array of mouthwatering flavours. Some of the standouts? Fish Baja-style, Green Chilli & Pork Chicharon, and Chicken Fajitas – all delish and all with a scattering of fresh toppings. Other mains like their Green Chicken Enchiladas ($24) and Sizzling Fajitas ($28) are also must-trys.

7. Moustachio

Next time you’re in Orchard, drop by Moustachio – it’s a casual space with alfresco seating where you can soak up the fresh air and rhythmic music beats. There’s a range of Mini Tacos (from $5), but what impressed us was their Torch Ginger Pork Ribs ($22) which came delightfully glazed with a spicy ginger sauce.

You hardly need a knife to cut through: a simple tug with your fork was enough for the tender meat to fall apart.

They also offer sharing starters like Sizzling Ancho Beef Cubes ($10) and Waffle Fries & Chorizo ($10). The drinks list here is extensive, with classic cocktails like Long Island Iced Tea ($18) and bottled beer like Hoegaarden Rosee ($12).

ENTERTAINER offers: 1-for-1 mains, house beverage, cocktail, bottle of house wine; 2-for-2 tacos
