Suntec City Has A New Pop-Up With Free Tile Painting & Brick Moulding Workshops To Encourage A Caring Culture

SG Cares event at Suntec City

Some 200 years ago, Singapore was merely a jungle. Then, we became a fishing village in the 1800s. Today in 2019, here we are – living in a concrete jungle that’s safe, clean and green.

Becoming one of the world’s safest countries to live in, however, only came about because of our forefather’s foresight and hard work (read: heart work). But being raised in an era that enjoys the fruits of previous generations such as easy access to education, medical services and opportunities to learn new skills, it can be easy to take the comfort of what we have today for granted.

To commemorate and continue the culture of building a more caring and inclusive society, SG Cares will be having a free interactive pop-up exhibition from 11-12th May at Suntec City North Atrium (Level 1). During this event, you’ll get to watch exciting performances by local talents and even create a giant mural with other fellow Singaporeans.

Piece together a giant mural in a free craft workshop

As part of the mural making, you’ll get to flex your artistic side by painting on tiles with various motifs and forming bricks in concrete rectangular moulds.

Don’t worry even if you don’t have any background in art; students from Very Special Arts Singapore (VSA) will be present to guide you through this hands-on activity. From my experience with them, we shared laughs and personal stories throughout the bonding experience, while carefully checking each other’s work to make sure they came out seamless.

I also felt inspired by the students keen eye for detail and creativity in mixing colours as we painted the tiles together.

There are 12 design motifs for you to choose from, and they’re grouped according to the various races in Singapore as a reminder of the multi-racial society that we celebrate today.

Eventually, these tiles and bricks will become part of the giant mural that shows how Singapore has evolved over the years. Like how the giant masterpiece is made out of tiny elements, this activity aims to remind us that everyone has a part to play in building Singapore’s community to be even more caring and inclusive.

To spice up the fun further, you’ll also be able to play a lineup of fun games with the cast of KIN – a local drama series that features the highs and lows of life in Singapore. Not only will you get to interact with the cast of KIN, but you could also bring home prizes like a SG Cares Wristband and limited edition tote bags.

Get to ask actress Hong Ling questions at the event

Mediacorp artistes like Kym Ng & Hong Ling will also be appearing to share their stories about how they have been involved in the community, and what they have learnt as volunteers.

Take part in the SG Cares mural pop-up event

Make your weekend count by checking out the activities at the SG Cares pop-up at Suntec City. Apart from being able to create something meaningful through the mural-making workshops, you’ll also have the chance to meet and interact with the organisations featured in the mural at the event.

This event commemorates Singapore’s Bicentennial and the mural built is a sign of how much we’ve changed over two centuries – since Singapore’s early beginnings to modern day with architectural marvels like Jewel Changi and Gardens by the Bay.

Through the various games, art activities and performances, you’ll also have a greater glimpse into Singapore’s past and how our forefathers built it to what it is today. History was never this fun back in school!
