WWF’s Sustainable Seafood Festival – Pick The Right Catch Until 15th June!

About the Sustainable Seafood Festival

MSC certified Cod, Salmon and Hake at Conrad’s Oscars

Singapore is one of the biggest seafood consumers in the Asia-Pacific region. We love our seafood, to the point of devouring over 140 million kilogrammes of it annually.

Unfortunately, more than 87% of the world’s oceans are overfished, and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) believes we’ll run out of fish by 2048 if we keep this up. To raise awareness of this distressing scenario, the WWF has launched Singapore’s inaugural Sustainable Seafood Festival, which runs until 15 June 2014.

It’s teamed up with the Marine Stewardship Council to create a new movement for responsible seafood consumption – which helps consumers “Pick the Right Catch”. Picking the right catch means selecting stringently vetted seafood products, or species from the green list of the WWF Singapore Seafood Guide.

The WWF guide is coded as follows – Green for recommended dining choices, Yellow for dishes to be consumed on specific occasions only, and Red dishes to avoid altogether. Yes, that means you have to forgo your CNY shark’s fin.

The festival is just one element of the WWF’s marine conservation work. They’re working with retailers, hotels, restaurants and traders to raise awareness of seafood from sustainable sources – that is, responsible fishing and farming.

Food for Thought

Members of the public can look forward to some sweet dining deals at the many restaurants and hotels participating in the movement.

No matter what cuisine you’re in the mood for, these restaurants will have something for you – from traditional Chinese delicacies to classy Indian dishes.

If you’ve been wanting to check out the Sustainable Seafood Festival but don’t know where to start, fret not – the TSL team has you covered! We checked out some of the standout restaurants in this list so just click on the links below to read their full reviews.

1. Seasons Bistro

Kick off your Sustainable Seafood experience with new American diner Seasons Bistro and their yellow tail taco.

2. Mezza9 at Hyatt

Mezza9 at Grand Hyatt has prepared a special 3 course sustainable menu, which includes this very atas version of Hor Fun, adorned by juicy scallops and prawns.

3. ToTT

Cooking school ToTT held a workshop recently that showed it was possible to whip up delectable creations with sustainable seafood.

4. Oscar’s

Oscar’s at Conrad is the only participating restaurant that offers a buffet throughout the festival. A love buffets and their MSC certified selection was very generous – so if you’re into seafood we highly recommend this.

5. il Cielo

il Cielo at Hilton is an exclusive 48-seater restaurant serving Italian cuisine, perched on the top floor of Hilton hotel. The great thing about il Cielo is how their prices are still kept very reasonable.

Take your pick!

Most of these restaurants not only serve great food, but are raising awareness for an important cause. Not to mention that having your next meal at one of these venues will also give you a healthy chunk of karma points, and knowing you participated in a good cause.
