Tatsu At Asia Square Is A Japanese Restaurant With Flambé And Blowtorch Performances

Tatsu @ Asia Square’s sushi and teppanyaki

It’s safe to say that Singaporeans love Japanese food, so much so that chirashi dons, ramens, and colourful maki rolls have even become a diet staple for some of us. But if you’re looking to venture out of your comfort zone and hit up a new haunt to satiate your Japanese cravings, here’s why Tatsu @ Asia Square should be your next gastronomical conquest.

Tatsu at Asia Square is Tatsu’s second outlet, with the first found on the ground floor of CHIJMES. Famed for its fresh authentic sushi and teppanyaki, this cosy restaurant is located 2 minutes from Downtown MRT station and seats up to 70 people comfortably.

Tatsu @ Asia Square offers private rooms for those who prefer a quieter ambience.

Your first step into the Asia Square outlet will introduce you to two sections – their sushi bar-top dining on the left, and a teppanyaki open-kitchen on the right with plush leather chairs and ample leg space.

Here are the “must order” items on their menu to help you save your stomach space for the dishes that really matter!

Tatsu’s Teppanyaki Signature Specials

Flambé Crayfish in Yuzu Kosho Sauce ($26)

A generous portion of fresh crayfish coated with Tatsu’s signature yuzu kosho sauce

Most of us are familiar with the tart, zesty flavour that is yuzu, but the word “kosho” may leave some question marks in our heads. Fermented with a mixture of chilli and salt, the end result is a fiery yet sharp-flavoured rich sauce that packs quite a punch.

A perfectly savoury entrée that teases with notes of sweetness

For just $26, you’ll be served meaty chunks of crayfish in a sizeable portion that won’t leave you regretting your decision. The menu also offers a variety of other seafood dishes such as King Prawns ($24), Oysters ($24), Scallops ($26), and Cuttlefish ($16), but we recommend going straight for the Crayfish.

Premium Grade Wagyu Beef ($168)

The flambé method of cooking caramelises the steak and retains most of its moisure

If you’ve an eye for good steak, the Premium Grade Wagyu Beef ($168) is sure to impress. Their A4-grade wagyu beef is directly imported from the Miyazaki Prefecture in Japan, then grilled with their in-house blend of sauces to medium-rare perfection leaving you with morsels that just melt in your mouth.

No part of this gorgeous steak goes to waste – even the fat is fried till golden brown, and served alongside it.

Omakase

If the thought of leaving your menu for the night in the hands of another scares you, Tatsu is the ideal place for you to build that trust. Whether it’s grilled meat, sashimi, or sushi rolls you prefer, the chefs at Tatsu will prepare a spread with fresh seasonal produce that’ll tickle your tastebuds.

The Beef In Foagura Sauce was one of the dishes we were first served

And if you fall into the health conscious camp, you won’t have to worry – the chefs are prepared for anything. The Imo Tofu Unagi and the Pitan Tofu are lighter omakase appetisers that can be specially requested too.

For a more exclusive experience, you can opt for the private dining area – a quaint space separated by wooden sliding doors. All you have to do is make a reservation beforehand.

Note: The pictured Omakase dishes are from the Asia Square outlet.

Tatsu’s a la carte menu: Fresh Sashimi, Sushi, Makimonos, and more

From delicately sliced Maguro (tuna) and Mekajiki (sword fish belly) to their skilfully assembled creations, you can rest assured knowing that each one of Tatsu’s sushi chefs has years of experience under his belt.

Aburi Sushi ($40)

If you’re someone who loves to have a pick of a diverse selection of sushi, the Aburi Sushi ($40) is for you. The platter consists of a soft and creamy tuna roll alongside seared toro (tuna belly), tai (red seabream), hotate (scallop) with miso, salmon, and ama ebi (sweet shrimp) with uni (sea urchin) – the complete package for sushi lovers out there.

Note: Do be prepared to wait 10 to 15 min for the Aburi Sushi.

From dry sakes like Hakkaisan Honjyozo ($38) to the light and mellow Kuromatsu Hakushika Yamadanishiki ($25), if you’re up for a drink, you’ll find a whole range of Japanese speciality alcohol to complement your meal.
