Apart from being known as a food heaven, Singapore is also known for her ‘King of Fruits’. Nobody can miss the distinctive odour and formidable thorn-covered husk of a durian. Durians bring out extremes in people – you either love or hate it.
If you’re a chocolate and durian lover like many of my friends, you’ve waited long enough for a genius to meld the two together and come out with what Hemelzs Chocolat finally did – Durian chocolate made from natural durians!
When I opened the packaging, a whiff of durian fragrance hit me before I could even see its contents. I am not the biggest fan of durians, but I enjoy a few when they are in-season, when durians are of the best quality. I was worried that with chocolates and durians both being sweet, one bite would cause a sugar overload. I was impressed, however, that the sweetness was in moderation. The rich dark chocolate complemented the sweetness of Durian.
The chocolates are made in Malaysia and are currently being exported to Singapore, China, Indonesia & Hong Kong. In Singapore, they are sold in all Cold Storage and Jasons Market Place outlets, selected NTUC outlets, and various other stores island-wide.
Since durian is native to South-east Asia and is popular among Singaporeans, this range of chocolates makes a great gift for those who want to introduce the Singapore culture to their non-native friends. I will not hesitate to let my ang moh friends try it as an introduction to the king of fruits as it looks way less intimidating without its thorny outer husk!
As the festive season draws near, this will also make a perfect gift for those who run out of ideas. With the classy package design, it would make for a thoughtful, creative gift that won’t burn a hole in your pocket.
